The Cream Always Rises to the Top…

January 5, 2009 by Marcus Grimm

I had a track coach who used to say this before nearly every meet, and I never really figured out how it applied to distance running. However, it may have a lot to do w/ social media and audience refinement. The always-interesting Dan Blank has written a don’t-miss post called 10%, where he stops about the importance of that last critical slice – be it your final effort, your final focus or – the top 10% of your audience. Here’s a bit:

What if you just focused on the top 10% of your readers here – the folks who come back to you 2 times a week or more? Then began tracking their metrics separately – how they got to your articles, what they read, how often, etc. What if you targeted your efforts to not just increase the size of your audience via tools like SEO, but increase the engagement of your core readers by understanding them better, and working to increase how often they come to your site, and how deeply they are involved with it?

We’ve said it before: Digital Magazines serve as an effective brand sifter. Those who choose your digital magazine stay longer and click through more and are more highly engaged with your brand than those people on your website. Blank points out how vital that 10% of your audience is. Digital magazines are a great way to find them.
