Times Reader Closer to Launch
August 31, 2006 by Marcus · 2 Comments
Several months ago, readers heard about how the NY Times & Microsoft were working together to create a new reading experience. It seems as if the beta version of this product will be launching soon, though I’ll be curious to see if the Average Joe can give it a spin. When originally announced, Times Reader was only going to run on certain versions of Windows Vista, and if you’ve been paying attention to the news, Vista isn’t anywhere near close to launch.
If you’re the gambling sort, you could download a beta version of Vista, but that’s a bit of work (and risk) just to read the newspaper, isn’t it?
The Times Reader guys have been good about responding to blog traffic. Maybe they can tell us if the Times Reader beta launch will run in anything besides the Vista beta.
Making Your Content Web-Friendly

Todd Zeigler has written a great post called 9 Ways for Newspapers to Improve Their Websites. One could easily argue that most of these same points apply to digital editions as well. In fact, some of these are already standard features within the NXTbook and others would be considered to be in the "just-around-the-corner" category.
Publishers should take a good look at the post and think about what they can do to delight the Internet audience.
What’s NXT for RSS?

A question we get from our prospects quite often is, “Can NXTbook provide RSS feeds?” Our short answer is, “Yes.” I won’t provide the long answer here (call us!) but the short answer is usually enough to satisfy most customers, often because a lot of them know RSS is coming, but – for their customers, at least – it isn’t “here” yet.
Bob Scoble has a great post on this subject, discussing the fact that while RSS is only used by 2% of the population, that number has seen strong growth in the past few years and is poised to grow even stronger in the next few years. All of which goes to say it’s time to be asking your digital publisher what they can do with RSS because – slowly but surely – the market will move there.

Why does a digital magazine make sense? Simply put, if you’ve got great content and make it digital, the blogosphere will reward you. To see for yourself, hop on over to Google Blog Search, and enter NYLON Magazine. You’ll find more than 22,000 results, a good many of them linking directly to the digital edition of the magazine.
What’s the going rate for 22,000 impressions these days?

It’s not often that a brochure surpasses our magazine titles for readership, but our hat is off to the folks at the Roy Thomson Hall. Their just-published 2006-2007 Concert Series brochure was one of the most read titles this week, aided by an extremely successful e-mail campaign. Rock on!

The Gravicons Have Landed!

“What’s a Gravicon?” you ask? A Gravicon is anything placed inside a NXTbook advertisement with the specific purpose of retaining attention on the page (which we’ve previously defined as Web Gravity).
Two of the best ways to increase the web gravity of advertisements are video and interactive surveys. To learn more about how to integrate these into your NXTbooks, why not read our new Gravicon Resource Guide!
